My story about Devlin's past. Rose wanted to know more about how Ethan became as he is today so she thought it would be a good idea to write Devlin's little story. I thought it was a good idea so here is the first chapter. Chapter 2 will be up later.
Chapter 1, Just be You
A five-year old Devlin sat in his mother’s lap staring up at the stars. They were brighter than anything he had ever seen before. He always loved the stars, he felt like he could go higher and higher to just escape with them. However, he loved being with his mother and father more. His mother, a beautiful woman with midnight black hair and dazzling red eyes was always the talk of parties. She was elegant and polite, never said anything bad about anyone. Devlin was honored to be her son, and to be a vampire just like her.
“Devlin, sweetie.” His mom’s voice caught him out of his thoughts.
“Yes Mama?” he asked with big eyes.
His mother smiled, her fangs barely showing but her eyes were bright and shining like always. “What do you want to be when you are older?”
This question seemed not out of the ordinary, especially for him. He thought about it. Anything he wanted? His mind drifted to his uncles who were always smart. Van Kleiss, he was always trying to help others despite his background, he focused on curing the magical diseases. And Greed, well, if anything his other uncle was a player and always got things the hard way. His father, he always seemed to want to make the world a better place, he constantly talked about it, how he could change the world if he had the chance.
With all the books he had gotten and the notes he had taken, not to mention his power. Devlin was sure his father could do it. “I wanna be just like Daddy when I grow up.” He said happily with a big smile.
“No Devlin.” His mother’s voice was stern and cold.
The small boy looked up at her, her eyes were narrowed at the horizon and her black hair seemed to be flowing out of her face. Her fangs were out a little bit as if angry with him. Had he given her the wrong answer? “Don’t ever wish to be your father.” She replied.
This confused him, for a moment, her voice sounded angry and her eyes were darker almost sinnister. She loved his father, it was how it was like all the time. But now, there was something about her that seemed different.
“Then what should I be mommy?” he asked, his blue eyes getting big.
She slowly placed a hand on his head and ruffled his hair. “Don’t ever be anything but yourself.”

Chapter 2, A sudden change in moods Few years later
Devlin, now 9 years old had gotten to be quite the looker, according to many of his mother’s friends, but he thought that they were just being nice. He always liked his mother’s friends, they made him feel differently about being a vampire. Despite not be able to do what his mother did, he felt proud. And even though he looked more like his father, he felt more connected to his mom.
The night during a big party, Devlin sat in his room listening to the people talking. There was one thing about being a vampire, he had very acute senses. So he was able to hear everything that was going on. Up to who was dating who, the latest marriage, even things that he didn’t understand. He listened for a moment more when he found a conversation worth his time.
“Did you find what I was looking for yet?”
That voice. It was his father.
“I have been busy too you know Ethan.” The voice sounded familiar but he couldn’t place it. “I have much more important things to do then go chasing legends.”
“This is not a legend, I can prove it!” Ethan’s voice had rising in a fairly high level. “I just need more time.”
“More time, Ethan, they are called Forbidden for a reason, meaning we shouldn’t go near them at all.” The voice said calmly. “Besides, no one has ever seen one of these phenomeons in ages..”
What were they talking about? Devlin wasn’t sure. But it sounded like something important. Whatever his father wanted, clearly it may help change the world. He hoped to hear more. Unfortunately for him, the rest of the conversation had been tuned out by music. Sighing, he laid back down on his bed and closed his eyes.
It had only been maybe a few minutes but when Devlin opened them again, he found he was no longer in his body. He was floating above it. His skin almost seemed translucent. Could he be dead? No, his chest was rising as he slept. That didn’t make sense. Then it must have been his spirit.
“This is kind of cool.” He said to himself, even though he was sure no one could hear it. “This must be dream walking.”
Dream-Walking, he had read about it in a book his mother had given him. According to her, his grandparents had been Dreamwalkers as well, and she had a little bit of it in herself. Though Devlin had never thought he could get it. Deciding not to miss a chance, he darted outside the window and looked around.
The world seemed bigger, brighter. More alive. The stars were much brighter, but there was something else. Something spiritual he couldn’t place. Floating around, he ventured down into the town where everyone should be sleeping. As he passed one of the windows, he noticed a young girl seemed to be crying in her sleep.
Frowing, Devlin entered the house, no doubt she was about six, due to all the dolls around her but her face looked pained and lonely. Placing a hand on hers, Devlin slowly found himself in her mind. It was colorful, almost like a candy-land and covered with strange creatures that looked like out a story-book.
Walking around, he noticed a younger figure, she was dressed like a princess, fair hair flowed down her shoulders and there were tears in her eyes, she was on her knees.
“Excuse me…” he said approaching. The girl turned, she however did not scream or look worried.
“Dreamwalker…” she muttered. So she knew what he was.
“Why are you crying?” he asked.
She sniffed back her tears and looked at him. “I lost everything. I can’t live in the world without them. I just want them back. I feel so lost and lonely without my family…” she turned to him. “I miss them so much, it hurts…”
Devlin looked around him. This must be the little girl’s dream world, she wanted to escape her lonileness. “You aren’t alone, you have people all around you, sometimes its best to learn from past experiences. They wouldn’t want you to be sad would they?”
“But I am the one responsible for their death!” the girl said.
Devlin frowned. “You don’t know that, you were there but you couldn’t have caused it, and they know it. Your family should love you no matter what you do. Even if it means you are a little sad, you should live your life out for them” he said.
The girl looked at him for a long time. “Thank you…” she replied.
Devlin smiled before placing his hands on the ground in front of her and creating a garden of flowers. “Your welcome.” He turned to walk away.
“Wait…wait!” she called after him. “What’s your name?”
Devlin turned and stared at the girl. “Devlin...and yours?”
The girl seemed to hestitant before smiling again. “Mami. Mami Tomoe.”
Devlin nodded before disappearing, hovering over the girl’s bed, he saw the fear on her face seemed to disappear and was filled with a smile. Giving a slight smile of his own he found himself back home in no time.
The next morning he woke up and walked down to breakfast. “Good morning Mom, Dad.”
“Good morning.” Ethan replied looking at his son. “You look different, did something happen.”
Devlin nodded. “I dream-traveled.” He replied.
The table had fallen silent, his mother had dropped her glass to the ground and his father’s eyes were narrowed dangerously. The tension in the room was almost suffocating.
“Did you now?” his father replied. “Good for you.”
“Daddy, what’s a forbidden phenomenon?” he asked.
At this Ethan seemed to go completely blank before turning to his son. “Devlin, your mother and I need a word….alone.”
Devlin nodded, taking the hint and ran upstairs, he didn’t go into his room though but sat and listened.
“How does he know about those things?!” Ethan growled. “He wasn’t at the party! Did you tell him?” “I do not mess around with legends!” his mother’s voice rose. “Besides he was in bed the whole time.”
“Then how did he know!” Ethan growled. “Did you tell him?”
“I did not tell him anything.” She snapped. “You are messing around with things that could get you killed, stop this before you put the whole family in danger.”
There was a crash, something had broken. “I am saving this family! Those objects could make us better people. Could make the world a better place. And you should know that!”
Without another word, Devlin watched as his father stormed outside. Devlin walked downstairs to find his mom, picking up broken glass. There was a bruise on her arm.
“Mommy…did Daddy hurt you?” he asked.
“No…no Devin.” She sighed. “This was from breaking up a fight. Nothing more.”
Devlin looked worried. “Did…did I say something wrong?” he asked. “I mean about the phenomenon thingys?”
His mom looked up at him again. “Just don’t mention them again…ever.” She grabbed his shoulder. “Do not mention them ever again. You understand.”
“Yes Mame.” Devlin replied.
----- Chapter 2, felt like i should include Mami in here. I miss being her. XD
